Is my home eye test free on the NHS?

In most cases, yes. If you can't get to a high-street optician unaccompanied because of a physical or mental illness or disability - and you meet one of the conditions below - the NHS covers the full cost of your home eye test, and often helps towards glasses too.

Quick eligibility check

Tick anything that applies to you or your loved one.

This is a quick guide, not a formal assessment - we'll always confirm the details with you before your visit.

Aged 60 or over
Registered blind or partially sighted
Diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
Aged 40+ with a family history of glaucoma

Who qualifies for a free NHS home visit?

You're eligible for a free NHS sight test at home if you can't leave home unaccompanied due to illness or disability, and you meet any one of these:

You are aged 60 or over
You are registered blind or partially sighted
You have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
You are 40 or over with a close family history of glaucoma
You have been advised you're at risk of glaucoma
You receive certain benefits or are on a low income
Help with glasses

What is an NHS optical voucher?

An optical voucher is given alongside a free NHS eye test if you also qualify for help with the cost of glasses or contact lenses. It can cover part or all of the cost, depending on your prescription.

You may get a voucher if you:
Are under 16, or under 19 in full-time education
Receive Income Support, Pension Credit or Universal Credit
Hold a valid NHS HC2 or HC3 certificate
Need complex or high-power lenses

Rising living costs shouldn't mean your eye health is neglected. We'll help you understand exactly what you're entitled to.

How it works

No forms to wrestle with - we handle the NHS side.

STEP 01

We check your eligibility

A quick phone call confirms whether your test is NHS-funded and whether you qualify for a voucher.

STEP 02

We complete the paperwork

Our optician brings and completes the NHS forms during your visit - nothing for you to fill in beforehand.

STEP 03

Your voucher is applied

Any voucher is taken straight off the cost of your glasses, so you only ever pay the difference, if any.

Common questions

NHS funding, answered.

Does the home visit itself cost anything?

No. If you qualify for an NHS-funded home eye test, there is no charge for the visit or the test - including travel to your home. You only pay for glasses, and a voucher may cover some or all of that too.

How do I prove I'm eligible?

In most cases we simply confirm your age and circumstances over the phone. If a voucher applies, we'll let you know what, if anything, to have to hand - but there's no complicated process to manage yourself.

Can you test several residents in one care-home visit?

Yes. Our qualified optometrists can carry out multiple NHS eye tests in a single visit, so every eligible resident receives professional care on the same day. See our care homes page for details.

What if I'm not eligible for NHS funding?

We also offer private home visits at a clear, fixed price, with the same qualified opticians and the same unhurried care. Just ask and we'll explain your options with no obligation.

Let's check what you're entitled to.

One quick, friendly phone call and we'll confirm your NHS eligibility and book a home visit at a time that suits.
